Every year, leading members of Congress make millions from stock trades that often appear to rely on privileged information gained through their public duties. But for the first time, there is a real, active path to banning congressional stock trading this year.
Why This Matters
Insider stock trading in Congress is a major driver of public distrust. Members claim they're just getting lucky, but many consistently beat the market. Nancy Pelosi's portfolio even outperformed Warren Buffett's legendary stock picking over the past 11 years.
Congress Already Knows Voters Want a Ban
A bipartisan ban on congressional stock trading has overwhelming public support. 86% of voters support it, with nearly equal backing from Democrats and Republicans.
Most members of Congress say they support a ban too.
So why hasn't it passed?
Because party leadership has refused to allow a vote.
What Changed: A Discharge Petition Is Live
A discharge petition has now been filed to force a floor vote on banning congressional stock trading.
It already has 72+ members of Congress signed on – including 15+ Republicans.
If 218 members sign the petition, Congress will be forced to vote, whether leadership wants to or not.
How We Force The Vote
That's where citizen lobbying comes in.
We are organizing small local groups to meet with their members of Congress or district staff in local offices across the country to ask them to sign the discharge petition.
These visits are rare. Corporate lobbyists show up constantly, but ordinary constituents almost never do. When they do, it makes a real impact.
We're asking members to do something they already say they support and that they know most of their voters support. We're simply showing them that we're paying attention.
