Reforming Our Elections and Democracy
Our electoral system is failing to reflect the will of the people. Across the country, Republicans are passing laws designed to make it harder to vote and suppress turnout. Partisan gerrymandering has escalated into a full-blown arms race. And at every level, the system is rigged to favor entrenched incumbents over the challengers who would bring new energy and ideas. We need a comprehensive overhaul of how we run our elections to reaffirm our democracy and put everyday citizens back in control.
In Congress, I will fight to:
- Protect the right to vote by passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to restore and strengthen protections against discriminatory voting laws, and the Freedom to Vote Act to set national standards for fair access to the ballot and end partisan gerrymandering.
- Establish term limits of 12 years for both the House and the Senate — six terms in the House, two in the Senate — and an 18-year term limit for Supreme Court justices, so public service stays public service rather than a lifetime career.
- Abolish the Electoral College so that every vote counts equally and the presidency is won by whoever earns the most votes.
- Modernize how we elect our representatives by advancing reforms like ranked choice voting and proportional representation, so that legislatures actually reflect the range of views held by the people they represent.
