Saikat Chakrabarti Earns Second Endorsement from Member of "the Squad" with Backing from Rep. Ilhan Omar
Rep. Ilhan Omar endorses Saikat Chakrabarti, marking his second endorsement from a member of “the Squad.”
SAN FRANCISCO — Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) has endorsed CA-11 congressional candidate Saikat Chakrabarti, marking Chakrabarti's second endorsement from a member of "the Squad" following Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib's endorsement earlier this week.
Omar and Chakrabarti first worked together through Justice Democrats, the progressive movement that helped elect a new generation of lawmakers to Congress. Chakrabarti later served as chief of staff to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez during her first term in Congress.
"I'm proud to endorse Saikat Chakrabarti for Congress in CA-11," said Omar. "I've known Saikat for years and know he has the integrity, courage, and principles this moment demands. He will fight for Medicare for All, getting big money out of politics, and fundamentally changing the system. He's the only candidate in this race not beholden to corporations, the Israel lobby, or careerism. I look forward to working with him in Congress."
Chakrabarti said Omar's leadership has helped reshape national conversations around endless wars, justice, and who politics should serve.
"Honored to earn Rep. Ilhan Omar's endorsement," said Chakrabarti. "I first met her at a time when Trump was attacking her personally on a daily basis, and even then, I never saw her flinch once — Rep. Omar is fearless. She has the determination and resolve to fight for what is right against the greatest of odds, and she has taken huge personal risks in doing so.
Rep. Omar's politics of moral clarity have changed the political reality in Washington, and she is one of the strongest pro-peace and anti-war voices in Congress. She is the model for what we need from our elected leaders today, and I look forward to working with her."
Chakrabarti's campaign has continued to gain momentum in the closing weeks of the race, building one of the largest grassroots field operations in San Francisco history with nearly half a million doors knocked and thousands of volunteers participating in canvassing, rallies, town halls, and community events across the city.
The campaign has earned more than 30 endorsements from organizations and progressive leaders across the country.
